Music Video for "Back on Me" by Mj Gill
Despite his small-town origins, Mj Gill has etched a name for himself breaking out from his humble beginnings to accumulating over 100,000 streams on Spotify.
It is a common ideology that you won't receive much support from your hometown and Gill backs that statement wholeheartedly.
"I had beef with my hometown," said the Alabama native. "People talked about me, said I was trash and it fueled me, I told myself it’s me against the world!"
Emerging out of the small-town mentality can easily become a mental plague, but Gill has managed to circumvent the obstacles in his path.
"I feel like I've been counted out for so long," said Gill. "I just told myself last year, people will know your name! My work ethic is crazy."
The Evergreen, Alabama born artist has been recording music since 2016 and has no plans to stop now.
"I been loving music my whole life," said Gill. "I dropped my first mixtape on Spinrilla, called Overdosed on Confidence, but I been really going hard since last year when I dropped my first video O.T.W and I just kept pushing."
His melodic, soft harmonies and smooth lyrics carry influence from Drake and Young Thug, among others.
"My biggest influences I would have to say are Kanye West and Young Thug," said Gill. "I love Drake, Lil Baby [and] Roddy Ricch, this new wave sound drip music."
Confidence is not an element that Gill lacks, exuding a certain conviction correlating to the work in which he puts in to achieve stardom.
"My sh*t got that bop and rhythm you can’t stop listening too," said Gill. "I feel like I’m the hook king."
Although Gill is excited about his recent accomplishment of accruing 90k on his music video for "Back to Me", posted by Reel Films, he understands that the journey to notoriety is not complete.
"I look forward to seeing where the record goes," said Gill. "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”
While many suffer from small-town syndrome, Gill is determined to break out of that box and take on whatever comes his way.
